If you’ve attended a concert, you can literally feel the bass vibrate through every cell in your body and notice an energetic shift such as a letting go of stagnant energy, improved mood and vitality. Sound baths provide a similar experience. It’s a way of reducing anxiety, soothing the nervous system, and calming a busy mind as you experience mindfulness through sound and reconnect with your body.  A sound bath is a therapeutic and meditative experience, where you “bathe” in the sounds and vibrations created by different instruments like gongs, tuning forks, and crystal bowls.

A sound healing session involves lying down in a cosy and comfortable setting, closing your eyes and focusing on the sounds of musical instruments including singing bowls, chimes, and therapeutic percussion. Through sound frequency and vibration, your mind and body enter deep rest.

Sound frequency and vibration affect the body at a cellular level, promoting circulation, flow of energy, and relaxation. As sound frequencies synchronize with your brainwaves - a process known as brainwave entrainment - this de-activate the fight and flight (sympathetic nervous system) stress response in the body.

The optimal brainwave frequency for relaxation is between alpha and theta (relaxed/passive/daydreaming vs deep healing). Here, we can relax body and mind simultaneously as we are literally 'bathed' within the sound waves, frequencies, and vibrations of the instruments. This helps you transition from beta-alpha brainwaves (awake and alert) to theta-delta states (deep sleep and healing).

Therapeutic sound guides us to a place where we are conscious of our surroundings but we feel deeply relaxed and in control of our thoughts and feelings. As stress hormones reduce, space is created for healing and repair on all levels of being - physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.

Research has already demonstrated that sound healing can induce profound benefits and can include improved sleep, reduction in chronic pain and blood pressure, lowered cholesterol, and a decreased risk of heart disease. It's also been discovered that sound can be an effective healer for a range of mental, emotional, and physical ailments, and has been a valuable treatment for conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders and post traumatic stress disorder.

A sound bath may release emotions that have been trapped in your mind and which can lead to self-inquiry. The vibrations shake things up at the root level and release energies gained through past experiences. So you may experience different emotions during sound healing, enabling you to process and let of any blockages which have been held within the mind or body.

Sound baths are a form of meditation as well as an opportunity to clear the body. As people connect to their inner selves, sound frequencies allow the body to come into a place of balance and nourishment.

After your sound healing session, it is recommended that you drink extra water, have a restful evening and early night to support the body as it releases toxins, emotions and rebalances your nervous system. Think of sound healing like a cellular massage!

If you find traditional meditation challenging, sound meditation may be perfect for you! The benefits can be felt after just one session, in contrast to alternative forms of meditation where the benefits are cumulative across time. Each experience of sound bathing is unique, Attending regular sound healing sessions is a fantastic addition to your wellbeing routine.
